Colorado State University Researchers are exploring ways to keep air clean inside homes, especially when outdoor air quality is affected by smoke.
We need your help.
We are testing new devices that help keep harmful outdoor air, such as wildfire smoke, from entering homes.
These devices monitor the air inside, the air outside, and how the house is operating. Based on that information, they can either make automatic adjustments or give you options for when to bring in clean air to keep people inside safe.
As part of the study, we are also looking at how portable air cleaners can improve indoor air quality.
We are looking for 20 homes under 2,000 square feet with central heating, no smokers, and occasional poor air quality to take part in our study.
WHAT TO EXPECT AS A participant
16 weeks of Data Collection
Air-cleaning appliances and portable air cleaners will be installed in your home for about 4-5 months. The air-cleaning appliance attaches to your central heating system.
Small Footprint
Instruments to measure air quality and home operation will be inside the home continuously during the experimental period. Each instrument is smaller than a sandwich carton.
Feedback Along the Way
Participants will fill out surveys describing their attitudes and experiences.
Real-Time Air Quality Notifications
During part of the measurement period, participants will be notified about poor air quality outdoors. They can choose to respond to this notification by operating the technology or air cleaner. At other times, the system itself will decide when to operate the technology. We will have a technician in the community to assist with any problems. This technician will also visit each home to change configurations about every two weeks
What Participation Means for You
“Thank you” in gift cards
Each time a technician visits your home, you’ll receive a gift card as our way of showing appreciation for your time and effort.
See your home in a new way
You’ll learn how the devices work in your home and gain a clearer picture of your indoor air quality throughout the study.
Insights for you and your community
After a few months, you’ll get a report showing how well the devices and notifications worked to keep air clean indoors. These insights will also help other families in homes like yours.
PARTICIPATE IN OUR STUDY
We are looking to identify homes as soon as possible. If you are interested in participating or know someone who might be, please let us know.
